Typolitic is a new website that presents some of the best typographic student work from undergraduate design courses around the world. It features invaluable contributions from several leading designers, typographers and writers whose work is referenced in students’ courses. This commentary provides a unique ongoing pedagogical forum with a fascinating feedback loop between the studied and the student. Also commenting are several guest experts from outside the field. It argues implicitly for the teaching of typography and design generally as an intrinsically political medium. And its basic ambition is to encourage many more of these kinds of projects so that they may become the seeds of emancipatory practice.

DO THE KIT IDEA!!!!

General questions:

What would it include? OBJECTs? MATERIAL? INSPIRATION? BOOKLETS? INSTRUCTIONS?

What would the objects included say about themselves and how to be used? How do they inspire typographic creations?

How far with experimentation do I want my audience to go to?

What level of expertise should they have? Should I make several kits- by level maybe with a little certificate maybe at the end of each? should I categorize digital typography from analog typography?

Maybe accompany it with a ‘How to’ or ‘What is typography?’ book, linking the english and arabic together? maybe a what is typography in the way of a comparison book of english and arabic and how there’s a strong existing dialogue between them and then the DIY kit would be the step in which the buyer/audience understand that by physical experimentation “diving in”….
